JUST LOOKING - BELUGA WHALE
JOHN CAMPS REMARKS Re: BELUGA WHALE PAINTING
QUOTE By John Camp: 'This painting was created from a photograph that I personally took at the Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus Leucas) was taking a time-out from his routine to study the crowd. It's extremely dis-heartening to see this magnificent, gentle, and unimaginably intelligent being in such an artificial surrounding. Known as the 'Canary of the Sea' for its alluring song, this second-largest member of the Dolphin family is gray at birth and does not become completely white until about 6yrs. of age. Of all the whales only the Beluga and its cousins, Dolphins (salt and fresh-water) and Porpoise, are able to move their heads freely, while the largest member of their family, the Killer Whale (Orca) cannot. The Beluga is also the only member of its family that does not have a dorsal fin, which is why they're aptly named Delphinapterus (dolphin-without-a-wing). I painted the background in a color that is representative of the frigid dark Arctic and Sub-Arctic waters of the Beluga's natural environment. They are 1 of only 3 Whales that spend their entire lives in Arctic waters along with the Bowhead and Narwhal.
I long for the day when I'm able to view these unique beings in the surroundings which God created for them, not the concrete barricades in which we imprison them.'

John Camps' Remarks About OCEAN GAGGLE
Canada Geese have always been one of my favorite birds. When I took this photograph I knew immediately why I would paint it. Aside from their striking beauty and grace, I just love the sense of family and togetherness that they portray. Whether they're flying in a V-formation or grazing on land or in water, they stick together and are always in constant communication with one another. When separate gaggles congregate they get along and share food sources with no real altercations, all the while respectfully introducing themselves to one another. I believe that these magnificent majestic birds, if studied by each one of us, could teach us humans as a society in whole how to NATURALLY act towards, care about, honour and treat each other... regardless of who we are or where we come from. Some of the things I liked about the water were of course the reflections, colors, flow and gentle movement. It reminded that we should all take time to reflect on what we have in each other, that we are all headed in the same direction, and that with all the ups and downs we face in this color-filled God-given world that we live in, we need to get along, stick together, and also that there REALLY IS enough of everything to go around if we could all just share.
LOVE IS ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS.'
